“Whatever You Say,” my short satire (or possibly slice-of-life story) about the ups and downs of freelance writing for hire, is available to read free on the website of The Invisible Worker zine. The whole magazine, which can be read free on their homepage, raises interesting questions about how the online gig economy changes the lives of workers and the broader understanding of work.
I’ve been writing and editing for hire on evenings and weekends for the past nine years. Sometimes that’s been a delight. I enjoy helping people for whom English is a second language get their ideas and insights across clearly in my mother tongue. I’ve gotten a good excuse to research interesting topics from the history of Muslim pacifist activism to the obscurer corners of Norse mythology–and gotten paid for it,too. Sometimes there are frustrations and complications, a few of which made it into my story.
